Across the State Line in Hermitage

Epoxy flooring in Hermitage is a short drive from Youngstown. The city sits about 15 miles northeast, just over the Pennsylvania line, and we work on both sides of it. Hermitage is the largest city in Mercer County, with 16,230 residents in 2020, and it covers 29.56 square miles, which makes it the third-largest city in Pennsylvania by area. Most of our work here is in owner-occupied homes with attached garages.

What homeowners here ask for

Census QuickFacts reports a 70.5% owner-occupied rate in Hermitage for 2020 to 2024, a median home value of $199,500 and an average of 2.04 people per household. Small households in owned homes often use the garage as more than parking. We hear requests like:

  • A garage that doubles as a workout space or workshop
  • A floor that looks finished when the door is open to the street
  • A basement that can become a family room or storage area
  • Something that will stand up to Pennsylvania road salt

Epoxy flake floors and garage floor coating systems cover most of that. Basement floor epoxy handles the lower level once we have checked moisture.

A township that became a city

Hermitage started as Hickory Township in 1832. Voters approved a home rule charter in 1974, picked the name Hermitage in 1975, and became a third-class city on January 1, 1984. On January 1, 2024, Wheatland merged into Hermitage. The result is a wide city with a mix of suburban subdivisions, older neighborhoods and rural edges; about 20% of residents lived in rural areas in 2020. A home on a larger lot may have a detached shop as well as an attached garage. We can quote both in one visit.

The 1985 tornado

On May 31, 1985, an F5 tornado hit Hermitage, killing 18 people and injuring 310. It is the strongest tornado on record in Pennsylvania. Homes rebuilt after that storm and houses built since are now decades old themselves. Settling cracks, worn sealers and salt scaling near the garage door are the common issues we see. Concrete crack and floor repair handles those before coating.

Fast turnaround option

If you need the garage back quickly, polyaspartic floor coating cures faster than standard epoxy. We will explain the tradeoffs and give you cure times in writing. For commercial spaces, we also install commercial and industrial floor epoxy.

What a visit looks like

We measure the floor, look at cracks, joints and any old sealer, and take a moisture reading if it is a basement. Then we talk through which system fits how you use the space and give you a written price. On install day we grind, vacuum, repair and coat in order. Most two-car garages take one to two days, plus cure time before you drive on the floor.

Keeping it clean through winter

Pennsylvania roads get plenty of salt. Brine that dries on a coated floor leaves a white film but does not soak in. A squeegee toward the door during winter and a rinse with mild soap in spring handle most of it. Keep a mat at the house door so grit does not get tracked across the finish into the home.

Hermitage Questions

Do you install floors in Pennsylvania as well as Ohio?

Yes. Hermitage is about 15 miles from Youngstown and part of our regular service area. The process and estimate are the same on either side of the state line.

I live in the former Wheatland area. Is that covered?

Yes. Wheatland merged into Hermitage in 2024, and we serve the whole city, including homes on larger lots near the edges.

Can a garage be used as a home gym after coating?

Yes. Many owners use a flake or solid-color floor under rubber mats. Mats protect the coating from dropped weights, and the coated floor around them is easy to wipe clean.
