Two Eras of Concrete in Newton Falls

Epoxy flooring in Newton Falls means working with concrete from different chapters of the village's history. On May 31, 1985, an F5 tornado tore through town, the only F5 in Ohio that day. It damaged most of downtown, destroyed many homes and businesses, and left 400 families homeless. Some of what stands today went up after 1985. Some of it survived. When we come out to look at a floor, one of our first questions is when the slab was poured, because older and newer concrete need different prep.

Older slabs

Pre-1985 garages and basements often have:

  • Paint, sealer or old coatings that have to be ground off
  • Hairline cracks and spalled spots near the door
  • Uneven areas where water sits after a rain

For these we lean on concrete crack and floor repair before any coating goes down. A coating only bonds as well as the concrete under it.

Newer slabs

Concrete poured in the rebuild and later tends to be smoother and harder. A slick troweled surface will not hold a coating until it is diamond ground. These floors are good candidates for epoxy flake floors or polyaspartic floor coating, since the slab itself is usually in better shape.

A river village and its basements

The village takes its name from two sets of falls, each on a different branch of the Mahoning River, and the river runs right through town. Water close by usually means damp basements in spring. Before we quote basement floor epoxy, we take a moisture reading. If the slab is wet, we tell you, and we talk about drainage or a moisture-tolerant primer before anything else.

Small households, plenty of renters

The 2020 census counted 2,149 households in Newton Falls, and 41.6% were one person living alone. The rental vacancy rate was 10.5%. That mix means a lot of small homes and rental units. Landlords often want a basement or garage floor that is easy to clean between tenants and does not hold onto odors. A solid-color epoxy or a simple flake floor does that well without a big budget.

Garage floors after a long winter

Winter road salt is hard on any garage slab in Trumbull County. The edge near the door takes the most brine and usually shows the first scaling. On a garage floor coating job we grind that edge well, fill pits and feather the repair so the finished surface is flat. A flake floor then hides the salt film that dries on top between rinses. In spring, a hose and a squeegee are usually all it takes to clean it off.

Picking a finish

A flake floor is the most forgiving choice for a working garage. The chips hide dust, tire marks and the light scuffs that show up on a solid color. A solid-color epoxy is simpler and costs less, which suits basements and utility rooms. Polyaspartic topcoats resist yellowing in sunlight, so they suit garages that stay open on summer afternoons. We bring chip samples to the estimate so you can see colors on your own slab.

Newton Falls History That Shows Up in the Floor

  • The 1985 F5 tornado. On May 31, 1985, an F5 tornado damaged most of downtown, destroyed many homes and businesses, and left 400 families homeless.
  • Named for river falls. The village name comes from two sets of waterfalls on two branches of the Mahoning River, which flows through town.
  • Ohio's oldest covered bridge still on its site. The 1831 Town Lattice truss bridge over the Mahoning is the oldest Ohio covered bridge in use on its original site.
  • Many small households. The 2020 census counted 4,557 residents in 2,149 households, and 41.6% of households were one person living alone.

Newton Falls Questions

How do I know if my Newton Falls garage slab is old or new?

You may not need to. We can usually tell from the surface, the joints and any old coating. If you know the house was rebuilt after 1985 or the garage was added later, that helps. Either way, we test and grind before coating.

My basement takes on water in spring. Should I coat it?

Fix the water first. A coating is not a waterproofing system for active leaks. Once the source is handled, we test the slab moisture and choose a primer and coating that can handle normal vapor coming up through the concrete.

Is epoxy a good choice for a rental unit floor?

For basements and garages in rentals, a coated floor cleans faster between tenants and resists stains. We often suggest a mid-tone flake that hides scuffs. We give landlords a written scope per unit.
